The ID.7: Volkswagen's Vision of the Ultimate Upper Mid-Size Electric Sedan

Volkswagen has been making waves in the electric vehicle (EV) market for years, and the brand has just released its newest addition to the EV family: the all-new ID.7. This model is the first all-electric Volkswagen for the upper mid-size sedan class, marking a significant milestone for the brand's EV lineup.

The Volkswagen ID.7 is an ideal vehicle for long-distance travel, with a manufacturer’s estimated potential range of up to 700 km (based on WLTP cycle) and a revised powertrain. This model is also spacious, with ample room for all occupants, thanks to its long wheelbase and short overhangs.

In addition to its impressive range and spacious interior, the ID.7 is packed with premium technologies that enhance travel comfort. The vehicle features a new air conditioning system and available Climatronic seats with a massage function, ensuring that passengers stay comfortable throughout their journey. The available panoramic sunroof with switchable smart glass opacity also adds to the exceptional travel comfort of this vehicle.

The upcoming EV is the first Volkswagen with a new display and operating concept, which was designed based on feedback from customers. The infotainment system features a 15-inch screen, while the augmented reality head-up display provides a unique driving experience. The new air conditioning operating concept integrated with the infotainment system and backlit touch sliders are also standard features.

The ID.7 is powered by a completely new, highly efficient drivetrain with 282 horsepower (210 kW), making it the most powerful and highest-torque electric motor in a Volkswagen EV model to date. This power variant is used in the ID.7 independently of the chosen battery size, and it was developed with Volkswagen Group Components in Kassel (Germany) and produced there. The new electric drivetrain has been optimized for energy efficiency, and depending on the battery size, as previously stated, Volkswagen estimates that WLTP ranges of up to 700 km and DC fast charging capacities of up to about 200 kW will be possible.

“The ID.7 sets new efficiency standards on the basis of the modular electric drive matrix (MEB). We are aiming for a range of up to 700 kilometres on the WLTP standard," said Kai Grünitz, a Member of the Brand Board of Management responsible for Development. "This is made possible by very good aerodynamics and by significantly increased efficiency in the areas of the powertrain and thermal management.”

The ID.7 is designed on aerodynamic principles, with a roof that slopes elegantly to the rear like a coupe. This contributes to an excellent drag coefficient of 0.23, depending on the equipment. This vehicle can travel long distances due to the combination of its excellent aerodynamics and more efficient drivetrain.

The ID.7 is expected to arrive in Canada in the second half of 2024, and it is sure to make a significant impact on the EV market. With its exceptional travel comfort, premium technologies, and impressive range, this vehicle is a step forward for Volkswagen's EV lineup and the automotive industry as a whole.
